The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered their second straight loss on Sunday night, dropping the Week 5 contest to the Dallas Cowboys, 20-17. And, with that loss, questions will arise about whether the Steelers should stick with Justin Fields or go to Russell Wilson.
Fields had an up-and-down performance. There were a few drives where he looked great, but there were far too many where he wasn't able to get the job done. Fields finished 14-of-26 for 138 yards and two touchdowns to no interceptions. He also carried the ball six times for 27 yards.
Granted, it wasn't all Fields' fault, as the rushing attack provided almost no support yet again, and the offensive line wasn't great in pass protection. But one simply can't overlook the fact that the Steelers have now scored 20 points or less in four of five games this season. The only game the Steelers scored more than 20, they lost.
Will Russell Wilson start in Week 6?
But for the Steelers to go to Wilson, who was named the starter prior to Week 1 but has missed all four games due to a calf injury, he's got to be healthy enough to play. The veteran signal-caller did do more in practice this week, but he was also limited for all three days before drawing a questionable tag and being ruled out.
During the broadcast, NBC's Melissa Stark reported that Wilson said he "should be ready to go next week," so take that for what it's worth.
It doesn't look like head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the quarterback situation after the game, but it doesn't matter because he wouldn't have given a definitive answer anyway.
At this point, the Steelers should make the switch to Wilson to see if he can provide a spark. The amount of scoring output for Pittsburgh through five games simply isn't going to get it done. If things don't pan out and Wilson proves to be worse than Fields, Pittsburgh can make the switch back and go from there.
