Russell Wilson injury update: Latest news on Steelers QB's Week 3 status image

The Pittsburgh Steelers named quarterback Russell Wilson their starter ahead of the start of the regular season, but the veteran signal-caller has yet to take the field over the first two weeks.

Wilson dealt with a calf issue during training camp, and he felt some tightness in it during the week ahead of Week 1, which led to his missing the first two games. In his stead, Justin Fields has been starting and the Steelers are 2-0 to start the season.

Despite lackluster production from the offense overall, many are calling for Fields to keep the starting job, even when Wilson is healthy enough to play. We won't know how the Steelers feel until Wilson is ready to take the field, though.

We got an update on Wilson's status on Thursday, both from the man himself and from the injury report.

Russell Wilson injury update

According to the team's official injury report, Wilson was limited yet again Thursday. Wilson has not practiced in full since Wednesday of Week 1.

Wilson addressed the media after practice and said that he's "gaining ground" in his recovery from the calf injury but didn't get into specifics in terms of his chances of playing or when he thinks he'll be back.

"I'm definitely gaining ground. I feel good," Wilson said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "I was able to do a lot more work today, yesterday, so we're getting better every day."

Wilson said something similar last week before ultimately sitting out. As of right now, the Steelers are preparing for Fields to start yet again, which will give him another opportunity to show he deserves to keep the job.
