The Pittsburgh Steelers are off to a 2-0 start to the 2024 season, but that is largely a result of the defense, which has stood on its head over the first two weeks while the offense has struggled.
Quarterback Justin Fields hasn't been great, but he's been able to do just enough to help the Steelers win. A bigger issue has been penalties, which have routinely made things more difficult for an offense that has enough issues as it is.
One way the Steelers can help Fields (aside from not committing penalties) is to add more help at wide receiver behind George Pickens. The team's current No. 2 wideout, Van Jefferson, has just 15 receiving yards over two games.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently named the Steelers as a potential trade suitor for New York Giants veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton.
"The Steelers could also have interest in the veteran pass-catcher," Knox wrote. "Pittsburgh has jumped out to a 2-0 start, but its offense has been average at best. Justin Fields has been serviceable at quarterback, but receiver depth is still an issue."
Truth be told, it has been tough to gauge if the Steelers have enough at wide receiver because of the offensive woes, but I don't think anyone can argue against the idea that Slayton would amount to an upgrade for Pittsburgh.
Slayton has posted 700 yards or more in four of his first five seasons in the NFL, something Jefferson has only done once in his career. He would almost immediately be the second-most proven wide receiver in the room if acquired.
The thing is, it's doubtful the Giants would trade Slayton this early in the season as they try to make something of 2024. But with the way things are going in East Rutherford, Slayton could be on the block by the trade deadline.
