The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the best, most consistent teams in the NFC for years now. The team in 2024, however, is going to look a lot different than the teams that have been so successful in the recent past. Gone are long-time locker room leaders like center Jason Kelce and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. They’ve also brought in new coordinators on both sides of the ball.
So what is the team going to look like in 2024, and just how successful can they be? That was a question posed to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer in his most recent mailbox article for the outlet. Breer’s answer is interesting, as he seems cautiously optimistic that the Eagles can continue their NFC dominance.
Breer highlights some of the positive changes the Eagles made in the offseason, bringing in former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley to help revitalize the running attack. He also shares that he likes what the Eagles did in the 2024 NFL Draft to aggressively address their needs at cornerback, drafting not one, but two players with a high level of upside in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
Breer also highlights the Eagles bringing in former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to helm the defense, along with the signing of Bryce Huff in the offseason. Breer went on to say that he believes that Huff “could wind up with 15 sacks for new DC Vic Fangio”.
But Breer is also quick to point out that losing both Kelce and Cox in the same offseason is a major blow. When he puts it all together, Breer believes the Eagles are going to be a playoff team in 2024, with “11 wins or so” as a fair expectation, but also cautions that there’s likely to be “some bumps along the way”.
