Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Britain Covey is one of the team’s biggest breakouts at training camp so far at a hotly-contested position.
Covey, the 5’8” player mostly known for his ability on special teams, has suddenly made some noise as the team desperately searches for a third wideout in the base offense.
Under a sudden spotlight, Covey recently revealed that he doesn’t watch top wideouts like the D.K. Metcalfs of the world, to say the least.
"Cole Beasley is one of my favorite people to watch of all-time," Covey said, according to Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "I think, mainly, he uses his intelligence first and then his quickness and ability second. And that’s kind of how I’ve always been as well. Teams only play man so much of the time. And so you've got to be smart in every sense of the word, and the big thing for me is just building trust with Jalen."
As a former undrafted free agent who made a splash on special teams by averaging better than 14 yards per return last year, Covey’s approach is clearly working.
That third wideout spot behind behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith is wide open. Neither Parris Campbell nor John Ross have seized it and two later-round rookies have his first-year roadblocks.
For Covey, watching an “undersized” guy like Beasley, who carved out a solid career over more than a decade, is clearly a good place to start, even if it isn’t the first name fans might guess.
