Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman found a cheap solution at right guard this summer, signing former first-round pick Mekhi Becton away from the New York Jets on a one–year deal worth $2.5 million.
Becton is looking like a steal through the first six weeks of 2024. While he’s had some slip-ups in pass protection, the 25-year-old has been a steady force as a run blocker and will likely command a much bigger payday during the next free agency cycle.
Roseman could once again be looking to add competition for Tyler Steen at right guard in 2025. For that reason, the Bleacher Report Scouting Department predicted a potential fit in pending free agent Brandon Scherff, the former No. 5 overall pick of the Washington Commanders.
Now a member of the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that looks headed for a rebuild, Scherff could be looking to join a contender in 2025 entering his 11th NFL season.
Here was Bleacher Report’s take on Scherff potentially joining the Eagles:
Mekhi Becton has done a solid job of reviving his career while lining up at right guard in Philadelphia this season. However, Becton is only on a one-year deal which would leave the team with a need at the position if he leaves in free agency.
Scherff will be one of the most recognizable names among interior offensive linemen on the open market. While he might not be the player he used to be, the five-time Pro Bowler has been impressive in pass protection so far this season with just five pressures surrendered through the Jaguars' first five games, per Pro Football Focus.
The Eagles have a ton of star power signed through 2025 and beyond, but Roseman will need to work on the edges of the roster. Depth at positions like guard, wide receiver, linebacker, safety and cornerback will all be top needs entering free agency and the NFL Draft.
Philly is currently projected to have $34.6 million in 2025 cap space, per spotrac. If the Eagles end up losing Becton to another team, a former All-Pro like Scherff at a potential discount would be a logical pivot.
