Tyreek Hill was reportedly detained by police just hours before the Dolphins' season opener on Sunday for a driving violation, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
At 10:50 a.m. ET, Schefter reported that Miami's star wide receiver was detained just two hours before the Week 1 opening kickoff against Jacksonville.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that he was "slammed to the ground, handcuffed for five minutes."
Hill is looking to once again lead not just the Dolphins, but the NFL in receiving. The 30-year-old is coming off a sensational 2023 campaign where he led the league in receiving yards with 1,799, was tied for first in receiving touchdowns with 13, and finished tied for second in receptions with 119.

ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported that Hill was "cited for reckless driving as a result of his incident outside the stadium with police." Hill reportedly got into a "verbal altercation with police" after he was pulled over. As a result the officer "chose to place Hill in handcuffs" and he was "cited and released after the situation was deescalated."
The Dolphins released the following statement on the matter.
"This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police," the statement said. "He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game."
On Monday, it was confirmed by Darlington that Hill received a citation for careless driving and another for a seatbelt violation.
Per sources, Tyreek Hill received two citations as a result of his traffic stop Sunday: Careless driving and a seatbelt violation. Calais Campbell, who said after the game police told him they briefly placed him in handcuffs for "disobeying a direct order," did not end up…

Evidently, some of the teammates who came to Hill's aid were also handcuffed at the scene. Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell was among them, as he revealed in a postgame interview with NFL Network.
Dolphins DL Calais Campbell just told me he was detained in handcuffs by police this morning trying to deescalate the Tyreek Hill matter. He says never in his 17-year career or life has he had anything like that happen.

Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the situation "mind boggling."
Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels released a statement following the citation, stating that she has requested a review of Hill’s detainment, including body-cam footage.

Will Tyreek Hill play Week 1 vs. Jaguars?
Despite the arrest coming so close to kickoff, Hill is expected to play in the Week 1 contest against the Jaguars, per Rosenhaus, and based on the team's statement.
Rosenhaus spoke about the detainment prior to the contest and confirmed Hill would play and that Hill was OK after the interaction with police.

If for some reason things change in the hours between the arrest and kickoff, expect Jaylen Waddle to be the top target for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Sunday. The fourth-year wide receiver represents the second half of the deadly receiving duo in Miami with Hill, as Waddle has recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards all three years in the NFL.
A Hill absence not only would increase Waddle's involvement in the offense against the Jaguars, but Malik Washington and Braxton Berrios as well.
