Dak Prescott suffered a compound right ankle fracture Sunday night, ending his season for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys' quarterback was having a remarkable season, finishing with three-straight 400-yard games entering Sunday's matchup against the Giants. However, the stats weren't necessarily translating to wins as the Cowboys had just one before Sunday.

With that in mind, NBC Sports analyst and Hall of Famer Tony Dungy said maybe Prescott's injury could work out for Dallas. However, he used a poor choice of words to explain his thoughts.

"As tough as this is for Dak Prescott, it might be a blessing in disguise for the Cowboys," Dungy said. "They've got a good, veteran quarterback who can make some plays. And this might cause them to get back to their old formula. Lean on the running game, and lean on Ezekiel Elliott. Help that defense out by controlling the ball."

Dungy was naturally criticized, as "blessing in disguise" was not the proper choice of words. And he later acknowledged that in an apology on Twitter.

Aside from the poor word choice, Dungy may not truly be accurate with his statement anyway.

Dungy's comments make it seem like Dallas hasn't been giving the ball to Elliott. The Cowboys have given Elliott at least 20 touches in all but one game this season. He's third in the league (behind Josh Jacobs and Joe Mixon) in total touches with 113 through five games.

So when Dungy says the Cowboys can now "lean on Ezekiel Elliott," there's not much more to lean on.

He's right in that Dallas is forunate enough to have a solid backup option in Andy Dalton. But the Cowboys will surely miss their starting quarterback, who was on pace to become the NFL's first passer to top 6,000 yards passing in a single season.
