The Giants were already without their starting quarterback Daniel Jones for their game against the Jets.
Now, they are down to their third-string quarterback after backup Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib injury midway through the second quarter. He was taken to a local hospital because of the injury, was subsequently ruled out of the contest and will be kept at the hospital overnight for observation.
So, who is the Giants' third string quarterback? That would be Tommy DeVito. The undrafted rookie performed well in the preseason and earned a spot on New York's practice squad as a result.
Now, he may be tasked with guiding a stagnant Giants offense through a rain-soaked affair while facing a top-tier defense.

Here's what you need to know about Tommy DeVito as he takes on a larger role within the Giants' offense.
Who is Tommy DeVito?
DeVito is an undrafted free agent who signed with the Giants after enjoying a productive five-year career at Syracuse (four years) and Illinois (one year).
The 25-year-old New Jersey native performed well for the Giants during the 2023 NFL preseason. He completed 43 of 64 passes for 453 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while seeing action across three games.
DeVito's performance was well-received, but it wasn't strong enough to convince the Giants to keep him on the 53-man roster. He was, however, signed to the practice squad after clearing waivers and has remained there ever since.
DeVito was called up to the Giants' active roster for each of the three games that Jones has missed with a neck injury, and that included the team's Week 8 game against the Jets. He will likely be signed to the active roster ahead of Week 9 to serve as the team's backup quarterback if Taylor's injury is of a serious nature.

Tommy DeVito college stats
After starring at high school powerhouse Don Bosco Prep DeVito enjoyed a solid, five-year college career, though he competed for playing time with Eric Dungey and Garrett Schrader during his time at Syracuse.
DeVito flashed a backup quarterback skill set in his lone year as a full-time starter at Syracuse while showing he could operate well within Bret Bielema's offense at Illinois. Below is a look at his stats during his five college seasons.
Year | School | Comp. % | Passing yards | Pass TDs | INTs | Rating |
2018 | Syracuse | 50.6 | 525 | 4 | 3 | 109.5 |

Giants QB depth chart
With Taylor out, DeVito is the lone remaining healthy quarterback on the Giants' active roster. Thus, the Giants will count on him to finish the game.
If DeVito were to get hurt, the broadcast indicated that Saquon Barkley would potentially serve as the team's emergency quarterback. That would force the Giants to run a lot of wildcat sets.
Surely, New York will hope that it doesn't come to that.
