Purgatory is a scary thing in the NFL.
It's easy to map out successful seasons for championship contenders and the league's bottom feeders. However, when you're in that murky area in the middle — too strong to sit at the bottom of the league standings but too weak to flirt with a playoff spot — things can get confusing.
In all likelihood, the Titans will have to get familiar with such placement in 2024. It's a year of transition for Tennessee, which saw veteran presences Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill, and head coach Mike Vrabel all depart for pastures new in the offseason.
With youthful replacements waiting in the wings, the future looks bright for the Titans. The present, however, could be a lot more challenging to predict.
With that, here's what you need to know about the Titans and their prospects for 2024.

Toughest tests: If the Titans have any chance of overachieving in the 2024 season, they'll have to put up some strong performances against good competition.
The Texans look poised to improve off of last year's divisional round appearance, with Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs joining up with prospective MVP candidate CJ Stroud and WRs Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Such a prospect should be a daunting one for a Tennessee squad that looks destined to sit near the cellar of the AFC South.
Houston isn't the only squad flirting with contention that will have its eyes set on the Titans. The Bills, Lions, Dolphins, and Packers all are hoping to make some magic happen come January. You have to imagine they'll be looking at Tennessee as one of the teams they can get stack a win against as they look to fortify their positions in the postseason.
Biggest breaks: The Titans could struggle at points in 2024. However, they have a few matchups that could offer something of a reprieve, namely duels with the lowly Commanders and Patriots.
Bottom line: It's hard to imagine a scenario where the Titans will be competitive in 2024. Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill, and Mike Vrabel are gone. In their place are youngsters tasked with leading the squad through what could be a challenging spell — Tyjae Spears, Will Levis, and new head coach Brian Callahan.
There's some veteran talent to be had among Callahan's bunch, including RB Tony Pollard and WRs DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Boyd, and Calvin Ridley. Levis should make some strides after being handed the keys to the offense partway through last season. Tackle JC Latham — the former Alabama standout who Tennessee selected seventh overall in this year's draft — should only aid Levis' development. After all, Levis was sacked 28 times in nine starts last year.
Nevertheless, Titans fans might be better off entering the campaign with low expectations. Greatness takes experience. At present, that's something Tennessee is seriously lacking in.
Record prediction: 5-12
