Texans' Jadeveon Clowney could skip training camp after failing to get new deal, report says image

Jadeveon Clowney probably isn't a happy camper.

The Texans pass rusher failed to agree to a new deal with his team before Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. He'll play 2019 with a franchise tag and is expected skip a "good portion" of training camp as a result, according to a report from ESPN.

He could be out as late as early September.

Clowney, 26, has spent his entire career with the Texans after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft. The All-Pro defender has logged 29 career sacks en route to three consecutive Pro Bowl selections.

But, now he's missing out on a major payday, unlike other franchise tagged players like San Francisco's Robbie Gould and Atlanta's Grady Jarrett, who both inked four-year deals Monday.

Houston was a middle-of-the-road team in terms of sacks last season but gave up the fourth-fewest point per game (19.8). If Clowney misses significant time it could hurt the Texans' chances of defending their AFC South title, which they won with an 11-5 record last season.
