Tevin Coleman injury update: 49ers RB (ankle) expected to miss time, report says image

Tevin Coleman's status is up in the air after he suffered a sprained ankle in the 49ers' season-opening win against the Buccaneers.

The running back is having an MRI in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday to assess the damage to his ankle, according to NFL Media, which cited an unidentified source. The severity of the sprain will determine how much time he misses.

With the loss of Coleman, the 49ers will start Matt Breida and have Raheem Mostert share some of those carries. It's an extra blow for San Francisco, which already lost running back Jerick McKinnon to a knee injury that required surgery.

Another option for the Niners is to activate Jeff Wilson from the practice squad to back up Breida and Mostert.

"We love Jeff, who's on the practice squad," coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the 49ers' 31-17 win (via 49ers Webzone). "Jeff's a great player. We'll see what's up with Tevin, and how long he will be out. And then we'll see what else is out there. But we like to have three guys up on game day, and if Tevin can't go, we'll have two, and most likely bring Jeff up."

Coleman signed with the 49ers on a two-year, $10 million deal in March after he became a free agent from the Falcons. He finished Sunday's game with 23 rushing yards on six carries and 33 receiving yards on two receptions.
