After a familiar divisional rivalry in Week 2, the third installment of "Sunday Night Football" in 2022 provides fans an interconference meeting of teams that meet much less frequently.
"Sunday Night Football" goes west in Week 3 as the 49ers travel to the Mile High City to take on the Broncos. Sunday will mark the first regular-season meeting between the teams since 2018.
Both teams are 1-1 entering the meeting. They each bounced back with Week 2 wins after losing their respective season openers.
LIVE: Follow 49ers vs. Broncos on 'Sunday Night Football'
While first-year Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is quite familiar with the Niners, first-year Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett is still figuring things out. The learning curve could make things difficult against a 49ers team that was one win away from the Super Bowl last season.
In a way, San Francisco is going through its own a period of adjustment — or re-adjustment — with Jimmy Garoppolo back under center. Garoppolo is replacing Trey Lance, who is out for the season after surgery to repair a right ankle fracture.
While it will have a different backdrop, the quarterback battle between Wilson and Garoppolo will still be a familiar sight. The two went head-to-head as recently as Week 13 last season when Wilson was still a member of the Seahawks.
Wilson has won each of his last four meetings vs. the 49ers; will he extend that streak in Denver?

Who plays on 'Sunday Night Football' tonight?
- Matchup: 49ers vs. Broncos
- Location: Empower Field at Mile High, Denver
The 49ers visit the Broncos in this week's "Sunday Night Football" offering. The two teams last met in Week 14 of the 2018 season, and very few players from that meeting remain.
One key player who does remain is 49ers tight end George Kittle. He missed the first two weeks of the 2022 season with a groin injury and has been a limited participant in practice this week. His status for Sunday night remains in question.
This game is familiar territory for quarterback Russell Wilson, who joined the Broncos after 10 seasons in the NFC West with the Seahawks. He faced San Francisco 20 times in the regular season and once in the playoffs.
Wilson's career record against the 49ers? An impressive 17-4.
On the other side, Jimmy Garoppolo will get his first start of the season for the 49ers after second-year quarterback Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Garoppolo helped lead San Francisco to a Week 2 win over Seattle.
