Throw out the records – it's Steelers vs. Bengals in Week 16. Despite both teams deploying backup quarterbacks, the AFC North matchup rarely disappoints.
The last time these two teams faced, the Steelers scored 13 points in the second half to build a lead the Bengals couldn't beat. That was Jake Browning's first career start and even though he lost that one, he'd go on to win his next three games. The same cannot be said for the Steelers, though, who've dropped their past three matches and have dropped out of the current playoff field.
The Bengals, meanwhile, hold a tenuous lead over three other 8-6 teams for the AFC's No. 6 seed. A win in Week 16 would further solidify their chances to make it to the postseason – even without Joe Burrow under center.
Pittsburgh will start its third different quarterback this season in Mason Rudolph, who hasn't seen on-field action since he played for Ben Roethlisberger at the end of a 2021 Week 16 match against the Kansas City Chiefs. He also started his last game that season. Rudolph attempted three passes at the end of the Steelers' loss to the Colts this past week. He completed two of them for six years.
Rudolph is perhaps most infamously known for an in-game fight with Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett in 2019. Garrett attempted to hit Rudolph with his own helmet after the two got into a verbal altercation following a late hit. Rudolph was fined, while Garrett was suspended indefinitely but later reinstated in February of 2020.
Now, Rudolph will have another opportunity to prove he can be a starter in the NFL with a playoff berth on the line. The Steelers offense hasn't looked great with Kenny Pickett or Mitchell Trubisky, so it's unclear how much Rudolph can elevate one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL.
