The Los Angeles Rams already made plenty of splashes in free agency, signing several outside free agents like Jonah Jackson, Darious Williams, Colby Parkinson, and Tre'Davious White. However, the Rams' roster is far from complete, as they still have plenty of spots left open that need to be addressed.
The Rams understand this, and head coach Sean McVay discussed how their free-agent approach will be ahead of the team's training camp period.
"Probably a little bit different than last year’s approach, but what we will do is we’ll look at ‘where are we at right now"? Understanding that there still are some limitations in regards to the evaluation process but what are the resources that we have to be able to have the most competitive team going into camp? Probably not to that extent but to say that there wouldn’t be anything that could come up, I certainly would never say that. Because if we feel like, within our disciplined approach, we want to be able to take, if we can improve the football team then we will do that."
That's a lot of coachspeak to say that he doesn't feel like the team will be super active in the summer in adding talent. I've already made the case that the team should add safety Justin Simmons, but it's sensible that the Rams don't feel like they will be active buyers.
According to OverTheCap, the Rams have just $8.5M in cap space for the 2024 season. That's not a lot of wiggle room to add another free agent, especially an expensive veteran, while they still need to save room for any mid-season transactions and necessary moves throughout the season.
However, they do still have some positions that could use better depth and perhaps a consistent starter at. How the Rams strike that balance between need and cap room will be something to monitor before the 2024 season.
