It may not be a good sign when your franchise owner is throwing around any form of the word "evaluate." Even worse, when he's saying it in Week 5.
In his first comments to the media since the preseason, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said, "We’ll evaluate everybody and see what the best plan is going forward."
Why is Johnson talking like this, so early in the season and with his team sitting at 1-3 ... oh, that's right.
A lot of teams have similar records ... well, four others do. The Saints, Buccaneers, Redskins and Titans.
But they do have Geno Smith, who has the ... fourth worst QB rating among qualified players at 75.1, according to Yahoo! Sports. That puts him two spots behind Tom Brady's 79.1. That's the kind of air Smith would have liked to have been with in any season preceeding 2014 and with veteran Michael Vick an ever-present option on the bench.
"I never needed to be reassured," Smith said. "I've always had confidence in my coaches and I believe they've always had confidence in me. They've expressed those things, but I don't get caught up in that."
All of this is in additon to the Jets being 23-28 since their 24-19 loss to Pittsburgh in the 2011 AFC Championship game.
It was Rex Ryan who led the Jets to that game, the second in as many years, and it has been Ryan who has overseen the succeeding 8-8, 6-10, 8-8 and so far 1-3 seasons.
However, no result is ever a forgone conclusion this early in the season, record or job security wise.
“We’re looking to build a team both on the field and through our coaches that we feel is the best we can get," Johnson said. "And so we make those decisions at the end of the season, when we evaluate everything.”
