Just hours after Washington confirmed the firing of coach Jay Gruden, Redskins president Bruce Allen made it clear the decision was "not for cause" and instead was about putting a stop to losing.
"It was necessary. Our 0-5 start is not just disappointing. We had much different expectations for the beginning of the season," Allen told reporters.
Allen went on to announce Bill Callahan, who has served as Redskins assistant head coach since 2017 and offensive line coach since 2015, will replace Gruden and take over as interim head coach.
"Under Bill’s leadership, the programs he’s going to put in, the discipline and execution, we believe we’re giving him the best opportunity to beat the Miami Dolphins, and the rest of the year," Allen said.
Allen wouldn't confirm if quarterback Dwayne Haskins will lead the team under center, but made it clear he thinks the rookie is capable of helping the team get a win.
"It’ll be up to coach Callahan who plays at any position, the same way it was up to coach Gruden who’s going to play. We’re thrilled to have Dwayne here. We think his future is really bright. Whatever gives coach Callahan the formula for success, I’m sure he’s going to do," Allen said.
Asked why Dan Snyder isn’t talking to the media today, Allen said “because I am.” Asked if there would be an opportunity to talk to Snyder, Allen said “he’s made himself available from time to time.” I don’t recall the last interview he’s done.

Callahan, however, said Haskins is not a candidate for the starting role at this time.
#Redskins interim coach Bill Callahan declines to name a starting QB. Says they’re checking the medical on Case Keenum and Colt McCoy but Dwayne Haskins is NOT a candidate to start right now.

Gruden took over as Redskins coach in 2014 and had a record of 35-49-1, leading Washington to just one playoff appearance, in 2015.
"Nobody's told me anything. If the key works on Monday, I'll keep working," Gruden told reporters when asked about his job security after Sunday's loss to the Patriots. "I've been provided ample opportunities to succeed around here. I've got good players, I've got a good staff. We just haven't produced on Sundays, or Monday. So [we've] got to do better."
The Redskins will have a shot at snapping their skid when they visit the winless Dolphins in Week 6 action.
