T.J. McDonald has been formally charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of drugs, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The charge stems from his May 10 arrest that came after the Rams safety reportedly crashed into a parked car. Police determined he was under the influence of something other than alcohol, which led to him being arrested in Los Angeles.

“We are aware the city attorney filed charges today against T.J. McDonald stemming from his arrest in June,” the Rams said in a statement, which misstated the month of his arrest. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

McDonald, 25, is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 7. If he is convicted, the NFL will likely levy its own punishment.

McDonald, a third-round pick from USC in 2013, has started 38 games for the Rams. He started 11 games for the Rams last season, recording 63 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, before a December shoulder injury ended his season.
