The Los Angeles Rams are trying to find answers along their defensive line after Aaron Donald's retirement. Part of that process has been to grow the responsibilities of players already on the roster. In the case of Bobby Brown III, the Rams seem to be trying to place him in a larger role.
“I’ve been more of a run-stuff guy since I got to college, even though I had five sacks my last year,” Brown told Stu Jackson of TheRams.com. “Once I got here, I haven’t played a third down to rush the passer. So now it’s just a whole different world, being able to play my game going to a different world I haven’t played in awhile, but it’s fun.”
Brown has been a two-down run-stuffing nose tackle for the Rams, rarely playing outside of their base formations and not accomplishing much as a pass rusher. However, the Rams are exploring the opportunity to have Brown be more of a factor on all three downs, something he hasn't done since college.
If the Rams can get Brown to grow as a pass rusher, that opens the door for him to potentially be the team's 1-technique in their sub-package looks, freeing up Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske to play at three-technique, a spot both are much more suited for.
However, this is a work in progress. Brown wasn't much of a pass rusher in college and hasn't been asked to do much of it at all, with the staff likely playing to his strengths on run-downs. The Rams have been able to develop players consistently, but this would be a welcome surprise.
"Just being hard on myself, being more detailed," Brown told theRams.com about his preparation for the upcoming season. "But as far as I how feel, I don't feel no type of way. Pressure makes diamonds."
