Once upon a time, Prince put on one of the greatest halftime performances in the history of the Super Bowl.
Now, it's possible we may see another Prince performance — in the form of a hologram.

According to a TMZ report, Justin Timberlake — performing at the big game for the first time since 2004 — may feature a hologram of Prince as a way to honor the Minneapolis native. Super Bowl 52, of course, will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The report also mentions neither Janet Jackson nor NSYNC will make cameos in the halftime performance.
Notable uses of the holographic technology include virtual versions of Tupac Shakur and Michael Jackson at Coachella 2012 and the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, respectively. It's worth noting, however, that Prince didn't think highly of performing with digital renditions of deceased artists, calling the entire premise "demonic" in a 1998 interview with Guitar World.
"If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age," Prince said at the time. "That whole virtual reality thing ... it really is demonic."

Prince's former drummer, Sheila Escovedo, has since stated Prince told her not to allow him to become a hologram.
Prince told me don’t ever let anyone do a hologram of me. Not cool if this happens! https://t.co/khtCjXr2mY
