The cutdown deadline has come and gone and the Pittsburgh Steelers are now down to 53 players on their initial roster. But one thing that hasn't changed is the team's shaky situation at wide receiver.
On their initial 53-man roster, the Steelers kept George Pickens, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson and Scotty Miller. The problem, of course, is that Jefferson, Austin, Wilson and Miller are all question marks.
The absolute best option out there is Brandon Aiyuk, but it appears there is no end in sight with that situation. The Steelers simply can't wait for something that may not happen.
Admittedly, the pickings are slim and there aren't many upgrades out there, but the Steelers must explore their options on waivers and in free agency. Here's a look at six players for them to consider.
Wide receivers Steelers should target
Noah Brown (free agent)
Brown is coming off a career-best season in 2023 after tallying 567 yards and three touchdowns for the Houston Texans. Making his numbers more impressive is the fact that Brown only played in 10 games. He is easily the best option on this list.
Michael Thomas (free agent)
Once an elite receiver, Thomas' best days are long behind him. But he could still be a better option than anyone the Steelers have outside of Pickens. Thomas finished with 448 yards and one touchdown in 10 games last season. He's the only player on this list who wasn't on a team prior to cutdown day.
Parris Campbell (free agent)
Injuries have been the biggest issue for Campbell, who has only played in a full season once. In that season (2022), he finished with 623 yards and three scores. Campbell can stretch the field and is a decent depth option.
Donovan Peoples-Jones (free agent)
Peoples-Jones was once a really good depth receiver after he tallied 597 yards in 2021 and 839 yards in 2022, but he fell off in 2023 and wasn't able to stick on the Detroit Lions' 53-man roster despite their own depth issues at wide receiver. Despite all that, he's one of the better options out there.
Terrace Marshall Jr. (waivers)
A former second-round pick, Marshall has been extremely disappointing over his three seasons in the NFL. His best season came in 2022 (490 yards, 1 TD), but he's coming off a campaign in which he was regularly a healthy scratch and played in just nine games. Admittedly, he's a long shot to work out, but maybe a change of scenery could help the 24-year-old.
Isaiah Hodgins (free agent)
Hodgins was a revelation for the New York Giants in 2022 when he reeled-in 33 catches for 351 yards and four touchdowns. Maybe he can rediscover the magic in Pittsburgh.
