After having the day off on Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers returned to practice on Tuesday for their 11th session of training camp, which comes just days before their preseason opener on Friday night.
And there was a big change at practice, as quarterback Russell Wilson did more on Tuesday than he has done at any point in training camp. After initially being out or limited over the first few weeks of camp, Wilson took part in a portion of practice he had yet to take part in, and he did more in another portion.
So, how did Wilson do? And how did his performance compare to fellow signal-caller, Justin Fields? Find out that and much more as we take a look at the team's biggest takeaways from Tuesday's practice based on beat writer observations.
Steelers training camp takeaways
Injury updates
"We've got a laundry list of camp-like injuries and so forth," head coach Mike Tomlin said, according to Steelers.com. "LB Tyler Murray has a groin; LB Alex Highsmith has a groin; S Nate Meadors has a hamstring; DE DeMarvin Leal had something happen, but it's that time of year. It's the dog days of summer. We'll get through it."
Russell Wilson has his most active day
Per The Athletic's Mike DeFabo, Wilson did more on Tuesday than he has at any practice during training camp. Wilson saw his first four reps in seven shots and took seven snaps during 11-on-11, the most he has seen yet.
Russell Wilson’s workload took a noticeable step forward today. He took 4 reps during Seven Shots (first time he’s competed in this drill) and 7 snaps during the 11-on-11 periods.

As a point of comparison, Fields took two Seven Shots snaps and 15 team reps in 11-on-11.
To compare, Justin Fields took two reps in seven shots and 15 snaps in 11-on-11. Wilson clearly isn't participating at maximum capacity, but this was a big step forward for the veteran signal-caller.
Wilson outperforms Fields in seven shots
Per DeFabo, Wilson and Fields rotated reps with the first-team offense during seven shots.
The Fields-led unit failed to score on his two tries, and one of those failed attempts saw Fields throw a pick to safety DeShon Elliott off a deflection at the line of scrimmage.

He basically rotated first-team reps with Fields. After Wilson hit Pickens, a Steelers staffer screamed “Your first touchdown pass as a Steeler!” pic.twitter.com/zefMFRoq1D
Meanwhile, the Wilson-led unit scored on 3-of-4 attempts, although two of those scores were handoffs. Wilson did connect with George Pickens on a fade for the other touchdown.
Troy Fautanu runs with the ones all practice
According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the first-round pick saw first-team reps for the entirety of practice, which is a massive step for the rookie, who has only seen first-team reps in spurts until this point.
Fittpaldo adds that Dan Moore was at left tackle while Fautanu played on the right side, but last year's first-round pick, Broderick Jones, saw reps at left tackle with the second-team unit.
Fittipaldo notes that this was the first time in camp that Jones has seen extended time at left tackle.
Zach Frazier has his best day
According to Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot, Tuesday was the rookie's "best day of practice."
Offense with a highly successful run period. Two good runs by Jonathan Ward and a 20 yard run by La'Mical Perine.

But best moment was Zach Frazier pulling right to left, kicking out Jacoby Windmon, driving his feet, and burying him for the pancake. Whew. #Steelers
Zach Frazier pulling again and crushes Beanie Bishop on the perimeter. Russell Wilson high fives Frazier after the play. #Steelers

Zach Frazier is having yet another phenomenal day as a run blocker today.

Dude is straight up MEAN. 😈#HereWeGo #Steelers
Jonathan Ward stands out
According to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, Ward has put together a strong training camp and continued that on Tuesday with one of the plays of the day when he broke free for a long touchdown run during 11-on-11.
