Steelers free agency 2024: Insider provides update on status of free agent receiver image

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have overhauled their quarterback room this offseason, but the wide receiver room is still a work-in-progress. Even after trading Diontae Johnson, and acquiring former Rams WR Van Jefferson, the general consensus is the team is still perhaps a veteran signing, and a draft pick in April, away from rounding out their depth chart at the position for the 2024 season.

One veteran seen as a logical fit is Bengals WR Tyler Boyd -- a strong possession receiver who grew up in Pittsburgh. Adding Boyd would be a big gain for the Steelers, so much so, a pairing of the two seemed obvious early in free agency.

It just hasn't happened yet, as Boyd has seen multiple receivers establish a market for wide receivers this year.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly recently appeared on The Fan in Pittsburgh Friday and might have explained the perceived delay.

"They're trying to wait out Tyler Boyd," Kaboly said. "I'm not quite sure how that's going to end up going down here. I know that he wants to get paid more than they're offering him."

An understandable issue. Two sides not agreeing entirely on the dollars isn't exactly unusual. Kaboly also wrote earlier this week perhaps not everyone within the Steelers' organization is on board with the idea of adding Boyd.

And it's still early. Boyd can afford to wait as other free agent receivers (like Odell Beckham) continue in talks with teams.
