The Eagles made marginal improvements last season behind first-year starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, improving from 4-11-1 in 2020 to 9-8 in 2021.

Despite that improvement, Philadelphia finds itself in roughly the same position ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft as it did entering last year's event: in need of upgrades at receiver, linebacker, cornerback and pass-rusher, among other positions. There also is the question of whether general manager Howie Roseman and coach Nick Sirianni are set on Hurts as the starter, or if the team will take a flier on a quarterback in a watered-down class.

That said, this is a team that made the NFL playoffs (albeit in a weak NFC East). The 2021 season provided cause for optimism, and the Eagles can flesh this team out further with some savvy picks in the draft. Philadelphia has 10 picks in this year's draft, tied with Baltimore for fifth-most in the league behind only the Jaguars and Chiefs (12), and Packers and Texans (11).

How Roseman uses those picks remains to be seen. Until then, here's a look at what the Eagles have to work with, and how they might address their team needs:

Eagles NFL Draft needs

  • Wide receiver: The Eagles made a smart choice in selecting DeVonta Smith with their first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but need additional help in the receiving corps in a critical season for Jalen Hurts. Jalen Reagor has not lived up to his first-round expectations, and Hurts needs more than Smith, Quez Watkins and Zach Pascal to throw to. Drake London, Jameson Williams and Chris Olave are all viable mid-first options.
  • Linebacker: The Eagles added Kyzir White in free agency, and T.J. Edwards is starter-quality. Beyond that, it's a mishmash of players without a true every-down backer. Utah's Devin Lloyd and Georgia's Nakobe Dean could be available in the mid-round — but there should be quality players in the second round, too.
  • Cornerback: The Eagles signed Avonte Maddox and have a bevy of young talent at the position, but still need a true starter opposite 31-year-old Darius Slay. Washington's Trent McDuffie could be available at 15 and, potentially, 18. Will Philadelphia pull the trigger here or bet on its in-house prospects?
  • EDGE: Philadelphia is coming off a season in which it had the second-worst sack rate in the NFL. The Eagles have addressed this by adding Haason Reddick in free agency and signing Josh Sweat to a long-term deal, but could still use a pass-rusher to help shore up their rush. Florida State's Jermaine Johnson II would be massive at 15, but Dean could warrant consideration as well.
  • Defensive tackle: Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrave are set to be free agents following the 2022 season, so this is more of a long-term play than an immediate concern. Georgia's Jordan Davis would provide a massive obstacle for opposing offenses in the middle of Philadelphia's defensive line.
