In a game that was predominantly a slow-paced chess match, it seems that COVID-19 ended up being the difference.

The Patriots, playing without starting QB Cam Newton, who tested positive for the virus last week, struggled on offense in a 26-10 loss. Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham combined for four turnovers as they took the snaps in his place. Hoyer threw an interception and lost a fumble in the red zone, and he also inexplicably lost track of how many timeouts the Patriots at the end of the first half. He took a sack with his team well within field goal range as time expired.

Stidham looked competent on his first drive, finding N'Keal Harry for a touchdown in the back of the end zone to cut the deficit to 13-10 with 13:45 to play. After that, however, he threw two picks, one of which was returned by Tyrann Mathieu for a touchdown.

The Chiefs were limited to six points in the first half on a pair of first-quarter field goals, but they finally broke through late in the third quarter with an explosive drive that ended in a Patrick Mahomes shovel pass to Tyreek Hill on a jet sweep for a TD.

It was a below-average night for Mahomes, who completed 19 of 29 passes (65.5 percent) for 226 yards and two TDs, but in a game in which the Patriots left a lot of points on the field, it was more than enough.

9:49 p.m. —  Patriots turn it over on downs and that should do it. FINAL: Chiefs 26, Patriots 10.

9:42 p.m. —  It's the 2-minute warning; Patriots have the ball, first-and-10 at the Kansas City 40.

9:38 p.m. —  Stidham throws toward the end zone and is picked off again, this time by Rashad Fenton. Kansas City takes over at its 33 with 3:32 to play.

9:34 p.m. —  Stidham converts with an 8-yard pass to Edelman to keep the drive alive.

9:32 p.m. —  Kansas City calls timeout with 6:43 remaining. New England has it, fourth down and 5 at its own 44-yard line.

9:27 p.m. —  TOUCHDOWN, CHIEFS. PICK-SIX! Tyrann Mathieu gets it off the bobble from Julian Edelman and runs it back 25 yards to the end zone. Chiefs are running away with this one; it's 26-10 with 8:55 remaining.

9:24 p.m. —  TOUCHDOWN, CHIEFS. Another Mahomes duck that should have been intercepted, but it falls safely to the ground. Mahomes scrambles for 19 yards on the next play to get the first down. A few plays later, he finds Mecole Hardman for a 6-yard TD pass. Butker misses the PAT. The Chiefs' lead is up to 19-10 with 8:57 remaining.

9:12 p.m. —  TOUCHDOWN, PATRIOTS. Stidham finds N'Keal Harry in the back corner of the end zone on third-and-goal. The Chiefs' lead is cut to 13-10 with 13:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

9:09 p.m. —  Stidham's pass to the end zone is picked off by Tyrann Mathieu, but it's ruled pass interference and the ball is spotted at the Kansas City 8.

End of third quarter: Chiefs 13, Patriots 3

9:05 p.m. —  Jarrett Stidham checks into the game for the first time. Damien Harris gets a big carry down to the Kansas City 25 line. That will end the third quarter.

9:02 p.m. —  TOUCHDOWN, CHIEFS. Kansas City finally finds the end zone as Mahomes shovels it to Hill for a 6-yard TD pass. The Chiefs' offense is starting to look like its usual self, up 13-3 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

8:54 p.m. —  FUMBLE, PATRIOTS. Hoyer looked sharper on that drive than any other tonight, but the Taco Charlton gets a strip sack on third-and- 8 and Ben Niemann comes up with the football. Huge turnover, Kansas City ball at its  21.

8:42 p.m. —  Chiefs can't get anything going either, Patriots have it back at their 16 with 11:09 remaining in the third quarter.

8:39 p.m. —  Patriots go three-and-out and Kansas City gets the ball back at its own 11 with 14:02 left in the third quarter.

8:35 p.m. —  New England gets the ball to start the second half at its 25.

8:21 p.m. —  Really poor job by Hoyer as he takes a sack on the last play of the half. Needed to throw it away to give Folk a chance to tie it with a field goal. Instead, the Chiefs lead 6-3 at the break.

8:14 p.m. —  We've hit the 2-minute warning. Patriots have it, second-and-8 at the Kansas City 40.

8:07 p.m. —  It looks like Mahomes fumbled, but it's ruled an incomplete pass. Kansas City goes three-and-out, New England ball at its own 20, 5:36 left in the half.

7:59 p.m. — FIELD GOAL, PATRIOTS.  Nick Folk hits a 43-yarder. Kansas City leads 6-3 with 9:31 remaining in the first half.

7:53 p.m. —  Call stands, New England first down at its own 44 with 12:27 left in the half.

7:50 p.m. —  Hoyer's third-down pass is tipped and then caught by Gunner Olszewski for the first. Play is under review.

7:46 p.m. —  FUMBLE, CHIEFS. Patriots get the ball back as Stephon Gilmore pokes it out from Sammy Watkins and J.C. Jackson recovers. New England ball at its own 15-yard line.

7:42 p.m. —  INTERCEPTION, CHIEFS. And on the first play of the ensuing Patriots drive, Hoyer's pass is overthrown and picked off by Juan Thornhill. After one quarter, the Chiefs lead 6-0, second-and-10 from New England's 23.

7:39 p.m. —  FIELD GOAL, CHIEFS. Harrison Butker hits his second field goal of the night, this one from 39 yards, and the Chiefs lead 6-0 with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.

7:30 p.m. —  The Patriots' drive stalls out, but Jake Bailey lands a great punt at the Kansas City 4-yard line. Chiefs have it with 4:38 left in the first quarter.

7:24 p.m. —  This time Kansas City goes three-and-out. Patriots have it at their own 27 with 7:07 left in the opening period.
