The New England Patriots are set to host the Seattle Seahawks at Gillette Stadium for a Week 2 matchup on Sunday afternoon after both teams won their season opener.
Each week, the Patriots select someone to be the "Keeper of the Light," ring the bell at the top of the new lighthouse and pump up the fans before the team takes the field.
In its short existence, some musicians, members of the armed forces and former players and coaches have inherited the honorary title, and for this week's matchup against the Seahawks, New England is bringing back a fitting former Patriot.
For Sunday's game, the "Keeper of the Light" will be former Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, who famously intercepted former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson to seal the win for New England in Super Bowl 49.
This is a hilarious move by the Patriots to troll the Seahawks organization and their fan base while still recognizing arguably the greatest player in Super Bowl history and a player who somehow deserves even more love than he's received.
Interestingly, the only players who were actually playing for those teams are on New England's coaching staff - Jerod Mayo (head coach), Dont'a Hightower (inside linebackers coach) and Matthew Slater (special assistant to the head coach). Seattle's head coach for that Super Bowl, Pete Carroll, is technically still on the team's payroll as a senior advisor.
