The New England Patriots wrapped up their mandatory minicamp roughly two weeks ago, and it was clear to everyone in attendance that the defense was lightyears ahead of the offense at this point.
That shouldn't come as a surprise considering many of the defensive coaches from last year are still around and most of the players returned as well. The offense, on the other hand, is learning a new system and has new players playing important roles.
This week ESPN put together a list of one player from each minicamp that surprised, and for the Patriots, Mike Reiss selected defensive end Keion White.
Here's what he said about the second-year defensive lineman:
"The 2023 second-round pick was mentioned by coach Jerod Mayo when asked if there was a player that has surprised him so far. "Keion has kind of taken that step forward as far as being a leader -- not as much vocally, but you see him actually leading the groups and working well," Mayo said. White played 45.8% of the defensive snaps as a rookie and looks primed to increase that number in 2024"
White has the potential to have a huge season with some snaps on the defensive line opening up this offseason. While he only recorded 26 tackles, five quarterback hits, three passes defensed and one sack as a rookie, his power and athleticism should help him see big jumps in those numbers.
