The New England Patriots currently have four quarterbacks on their roster with veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye really fighting for the starting job.
Maye arrived at rookie minicamp with a lot to work on, and while he still may have a ways to go before he's ready to step on an NFL field and lead a team, he's making positive strides.
"He's doing well," Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said about Maye before the team's organized team activity session on Tuesday. "He's headed in the right direction. A lot of times people think it's this longitudinal, just a straight line up to the top. Realistically, it's up-and-down, up-and-down, up-and-down, but hopefully, you end up still, from left to right, going in the right direction. He's doing well. You guys, I'm sure, will evaluate him today at practice."
Being a third-overall pick, Maye will have a ton of pressure on his shoulders, and he should just be trying to learn the basics right now before worrying about winning the job.
If he rushes into the competition too quickly, it may negatively impact his performance on the field.
For now, Maye should just take it one day at a time.
