The New England Patriots went into this offseason with a clear need at wide receiver, and they tried to sign wide receiver Calvin Ridley to address the issue, but he ended up signing with the Tennessee Titans.
Despite New England having more cap space to spend than just about every team in the NFL, de facto general manager Eliot Wolf said the team was flat-out outbid for the wideout's services.
"Another team offered more money would be the main thing," Wolf said at his pre-draft press conference when asked what broke down during the negotiations.
The 29-year-old signed a four-year, $92 million deal with Tennessee after recording 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight scores in his first season following a suspension for gambling.
New England had no excuse to be outbid, but that's probably not the only reason why Ridley chose the Titans. Tennessee may be going into a season with a new head coach, but they appear to have their starting quarterback in place in Will Levis. The Patriots can't say the same yet.
