The New England Patriots are on their long break between mandatory minicamp and training camp in late July at Gillette Stadium, and this is a perfect time for some players to give back to their communities and to the next generation.
On Saturday, June 29, Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise will hold his sixth annual 'Wise Big Man Camp' for aspiring offensive and defensive linemen. The free camp will take place at Brian Brazil Stadium at Hebron High School, where Wise played high school football, and will be hosted by Deatrich, his father and two brothers, Daniel (All-UFL defensive lineman) and Solomon (former Texas San-Antonio defensive end).
“When I was in high school, I was like, ‘Man, they have all these wide receiver and DB camps and camps for skill guys, but nothing for the linemen,’” Wise said. “Even if I did find a camp, it was too far away or too expensive. When I made it to the league, I knew I wanted to put on a camp. I didn’t want it to be like a big-man challenge. I wanted to do actual drills and teach them skills that they could actually benefit from and improve their timing.
“Having this camp is my way of not only giving back to the community but also providing an opportunity for kids to work on fundamentals and techniques in every aspect of the game."
The camp, which is meant for attendees aged 14 to 18, is aimed to help young players develop their techniques and character. It will also feature special coaching from Patriots offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, Washington Commanders defensive end Dorance Armstrong and former NFL defensive end Shaun Smith.
