While former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was playing in the NFL, he wasn't making appearances on many podcasts or television shows, but now that he's retired, it seems like Brady is popping up everywhere.
On a recent appearance of "The Pivot" podcast, Brady shared his appreciation for the amount of fun Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seems to have on the field. Brady even said that he would probably like to do the same if he could do it all again.
"When I see these young players, I see Patrick out there at quarterback, running around, laughing, having fun, I'm like 'I used to be like that. What the hell happened to me?'" Brady shared. "I just got too serious. I can only look back and think 'OK, if I do it again, which I'll never do it again, I would be different.' But the reality is you can't, so you just learn from it and go 'OK, now next phase of life, enjoy it a little bit.'"
While the sentiment is surely something that we can all understand, former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria, who is now a radio host for Boston's WEEI, felt he had to call his old quarterback out.
“I think Brady is a liar,” Fauria said playfully. “When I heard it, I was like, ‘Who’s he kidding? He can’t change. He can’t downshift. This is not who he is. He’s not wired like Mahomes.'”
The former tight end continued to explain his take despite his co-host, Andy Gresh, fighting back.
“I’ve seen him have a great time; I’ve heard him laugh and joke around,” Fauria continue. "But when it came to the game, you could see it during certain passes, or where he won a game or got a first down.
“He’s extremely happy, he’s celebrating like a little kid, but the reality is he is just wired so differently than Mahomes. Everything about him is different.”
While the liar title might be a little much, Fauria and Gresh both make interesting points. Brady is the ultimate competitor. He was fueled by winning, and it probably wouldn't have been possible to be that focused on Super Bowls while still having a great time for him.
Mahomes is certainly on his way with three Lombardi Trophies already, but he still has a few to go before he nears Brady's success.
