Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl record: How Chiefs QB compares to Tom Brady, other legends with fourth trip by age 28 image

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes II admitted being one of the "older guys" in the locker room.

Yet the 28 year old quarterback continues to pile up accomplishments at an incredible rate. Kansas City beat Baltimore 17-10 on Sunday and advanced to Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nev., on Feb. 11. The Chiefs are in position to win their third Super Bowl in five seasons.

At that rate, would Mahomes actually be in position to take a run at Tom Brady? How long will Mahomes play in the NFL? He answered that question in an interview with Sporting News on July 11.

"I want to play for a lot longer, especially the quarterback position," Mahomes told SN. "You're given the opportunity to do that now and you see it around the league, but you have to keep that pedal down. You can't let up because guys are always coming to try to win that championship. I want to try to do what I can to win some more."

How much more can Mahomes accomplish? Is a run at Tom Brady – who won seven Super Bowls in a 23-year career with the Patriots and Buccaneers – possible? A look at Mahomes' playoff record, AFC championship record and Super Bowl accomplishments heading into the AFC championship matchup against Baltimore.

Patrick Mahomes AFC championship record

Mahomes is now 4-2 in the AFC championship game – but he is ahead of the pace that Tom Brady set during his career, according Sportico’s Lev Akabas:

Brady was 10-4 in conference championship games. That is double the number of appearances as the next quarterbacks in Roger Staubach (5-2) and Joe Montana (4-3). Steve Young had seven conference championship appearances, but he was 1-3 as starter and was a backup for Montana for three of those games.

Mahomes is tied with John Elway (5-1) and Terry Bradshaw (4-2) with six AFC championship game appearances.

The Chiefs have made the AFC championship in six straight seasons. Brady led the Patriots to eight straight AFC championship games from 2011-18.

Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl record

Mahomes is 2-1 in the Super Bowl and one of 13 quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl victories. He is the eighth quarterback to make a fourth Super Bowl appearance.

Four quarterbacks have at least three Super Bowl victories as a starter. That list includes Brady, Montana, Bradshaw and Troy Aikman.

Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady Super Bowls

When Brady retired after the 2022 season, it was unthinkable that any quarterback who could make a run at seven Super Bowl championships and 10 appearances.

Yet Mahomes is giving us something to think about. Mahomes has four Super Bowl appearances in his first seven seasons – one of which was spent as a backup.

If Mahomes wins a third Super Bowl this season and can match Brady’s longevity – then in theory he would need four Super Bowls in 16 seasons to tie Brady. The fact this is a conversation speaks to just how amazing Mahomes has been to this point in his career.
