A good quarterback is worth his weight in gold. A great one? That's priceless. Today, there may not be better field general in the NFL than Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes.
In a position of stars, Mahomes may be the NFL's biggest. He threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 passing touchdowns in his first year as a starter and has 75 touchdown passes over the past two seasons. Oh, and he has a Super Bowl ring.
At just 26 years old, the sky is the limit for Mahomes both on- and off-the-field. He's an effervescent presence on the field, making the type of daring throws that hold fans' breaths for hostage.
Away from the field, Mahomes has become an increasingly noticeable presence, too. His flowing hair and distinct voice can be found on numerous billboards, print ads and television spots.
So what is Mahomes' true value? How much has the Chiefs quarterback made over his career? And how much is he due to make in 2022?
Here's a breakdown of Mahomes' net worth, which includes money made in 2022 and over the course of his NFL career, plus endorsements and business dealings:
How much does Patrick Mahomes make?
Mahomes is one of the NFL's biggest draws. He's paid as such, too.
The 2018 NFL MVP inked a mammoth 10-year, $450 million contract in the summer of 2020, the biggest deal in NFL history.
The deal is eye-popping. Mahomes is earning an average annual value (AAV) of $45 million, among the highest figures in the league. However, as is the case with many contracts in the NFL, Mahomes' agreement with the Chiefs has a host of quirks.
How much will Patrick Mahomes make in 2022?
For starters, Mahomes' base salary is just $1,500,000 in 2022, according to Spotrac. That's chump change for an NFL franchise, right?
Well, yes and no. Mahomes base salary does appear to be very low. However, it's all in the details for Mahomes. Here's the breakdown for Mahomes' contract:
Contract
Mahomes is set to receive a roster bonus of $27.4 million in 2022. He also has a signing bonus of $2,000,000 due to him over the course of the season, according to Spotrac.
Mahomes will also earn an additional $550,000 for attending team workouts during the offseason.
For those of you doing the math, that means Mahomes will be making $29.45 million in 2022. Decent.
Incentives
As SN's Joe Rivera noted back in October, Mahomes' current deal has two incentives attached to it; he'll earn $1.25 million if the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl and $1.25 million if he wins MVP. That means every season, Mahomes can pocket up to $2.5 million in additional funds. Maybe he can buy himself some more ketchup.
Patrick Mahomes career earnings
Despite not being in the league very long, Mahomes has made himself a pretty penny, all things considered. To date, Mahomes has reeled in about $47.5 million, per Spotrac.
Mahomes has had a bit of a weird journey when it comes to contracts. A first-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2017, Mahomes nabbed about $10.5 million as a rookie despite playing just one game.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs saw enough in the then-22-year-old, though, sending veteran quarterback Alex Smith to the now Commanders. Mahomes proceeded to show that Kansas City's faith in him was warranted, taking home NFL MVP honors in his first full season.
Mahomes followed up his MVP campaign with 26 passing touchdowns to just five interceptions in 2019. Yet, the Chiefs' starter earned $1.2 million and $2 million in those two season, respectively.
By signing the Chiefs' massive contract offer in 2020, Mahomes set the market for himself and others. He crossed the eight-figure plateau once again in 2020 and hasn't looked back since.
Here is a breakdown of all of his contracts, courtesy of Spotrac:
- 2017: 4-year, $16.4 million contract
- 2020: 12-year, $502.63 million contract extension
Patrick Mahomes net worth
Per CelebrityNetWorth.com, Patrick Mahomes net worth is $40 million. The Texas-born hurler is still a young buck compared to some of the league's biggest names like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. But his money is long. And only getting longer.
Mahomes' current $140 million deal is fully guaranteed. Another $337 million is safeguarded by "guaranteed mechanisms." His net worth looks poised to explode in the coming few years, especially as his business interests grow more varied.
To date, though, Mahomes is keeping it cool. He's got a handful of successful endorsement deals, including ones with Adidas, DirectTV and Head and Shoulders. If that's not enough, Mahomes has also been keen to working with staples of the local and midwestern economy; places like CommunityAmerica, Goodcents and HyVee. That portfolio should only grow more and more diverse as the years go on.
