NFL trade rumors: Adam Gase completes first deal as Jets interim GM, sends Darron Lee to Chiefs image

Adam Gase didn’t waste any time.

Gase, the Jets coach and interim general manager, agreed Wednesday to send linebacker Darron Lee to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick, according to a report from ESPN, which cites unidentified league sources.

The Jets selected Lee out of Ohio State with the 20th pick in the 2016 draft. But he was inconsistent, recording just four sacks during his time in New York.

The 24-year-old totaled 74 tackles and three interceptions in 12 games last season. New York had reportedly been shopping him for most of the offseason.

Gase was elevated into the role of leading New York’s front office earlier in the day after the team fired Mike Maccagnan. Gase was hired by the Jets in mid-January and has yet to coach a game with the team.

"The more I looked, the more I realized that I wanted to move on," Jets CEO Christopher Johnson told reporters about the decision. "It was only through diving deep into the organization, it was only through going through this particular offseason deeply that I understood how this organization was lacking in certain ways.

"This is more than Mike. It's more than Adam. This is about the team moving forward."

The Jets finished 2018 with 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for an eighth straight season.
