NFL power rankings: Bills, Buccaneers, Browns rise; 49ers, Cowboys, Bears drop for Week 5 image

With Week 4 in the NFL finishing in 2020, it's more expecting the unexpected with a quarter of the season already finished. The results showed there's still a lot to learn about every team, especially with a rash of injuries hitting so many.

The league's developing powerhouse contenders go into Week 5 on a roll, while many of the so-called bad teams are proving they have some extra fight. As usual, there's an interesting intersection of early surprise and disappointment.

So how do all 32 teams stack up against each other now? Here's our latest look at the best through the worst in our updated Sporting News power rankings:

NFL power rankings

1. Kansas City Chiefs 4-0 (last week's ranking: 1)

The Chiefs caught a break with a delayed game in Week 3, as they beat the Patriots at home without Cam Newton. That also delays their next big AFC test to Week 6 at the Bills on a Thursday night.

2. Seattle Seahawks 4-0 (2)

The Seahawks were slow out of the gate with their longest of road trips to Miami, but then they picked it up with the running game and Russell Wilson playing elite closer. It was encouraging their Jamal Adams-less defense dug deep for Pete Carroll.

3. Baltimore Ravens 3-1 (3)

The Ravens rebounded from the Chiefs to take care of business the way they usually do against lesser opponents such as Washington with Lamar Jackson, Mark Andrews and their traditional running game. The defensive issues are still a bit concerning in relation to the Steelers in the AFC North.

4. Buffalo Bills 4-0 (5)

The Bills have now put together two impressive wins over the Rams and Raiders because of Josh Allen playing at an MVP level a notch below Wilson. The tests will keep on coming with the Titans and the Chiefs next.

5. Green Bay Packers 4-0 (4)

The Packers' offense has seemed unstoppable with Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones, and it might actually be. They didn't slow down against the Falcons with a bye ahead to get healthier before facing Tom Brady's Buccaneers.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers 3-0 (6)

The Steelers got an unexpected bye because of the Titans' COVID-19 issues. They have a tough stretch ahead with the Eagles and Browns at home, followed by the Titans, Ravens and Cowboys all on the road, now with no more breaks.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3-1 (9)

The Buccaneers were sloppy again early offensively and throughout the game defensively against the Chargers, but Brady showed his vintage best to outduel much younger rookie Justin Herbert. That's exactly why they got the GOAT.

8. Los Angeles Rams 3-1 (11)

The Rams got a little chippy against the Giants, namely Jalen Ramsey vs. Golden Tate, but their defense made another huge statement when their offense struggled more than expected. They once again look like a top-two team in the NFC West.

9. Tennessee Titans 3-0 (10)

The Titans will get through another week undefeated but now we will see how they respond to the coronavirus-created adversity. With Mike Vrabel leading them, the expectation is that they will come out as stronger AFC South favorites.

10. New England Patriots 2-2 (7)

The Patriots can't be pleased about Newton being out of action for a critical game against the Chiefs. They're staring at an early two-game deficit in the AFC East behind the red-hot Bills.

The referenced media source is missing and needs to be re-embedded.

11. New Orleans Saints 2-2 (15)

The Saints march back up with a needed quick comeback win over the Lions, imposing their offensive will in another week without Michael Thomas. It's still not pretty with Drew Brees and the defense, but the running of Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray gives them a high floor every week.

12. Cleveland Browns 3-1 (16)

The Browns' running game is smashing it under Kevin Stefanski as expected, with Baker Mayfield playing more comfortable caretaker. They won't lose much without Nick Chubb because of Kareem Hunt. The defense has improved against the run, too, in a sneaky needed development.

BENDER: Yes, the 2020 Browns are for real as a playoff contender

13. San Francisco 49ers 2-2 (8)

Nick Mullens hit the wall against the Eagles' pass rush and the 49ers' defensive injuries hurt them more than their offensive ones, as they are getting healthier with George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. They need Jimmy Garoppolo back and he should be appreciated more now.

14. Indianapolis Colts 3-1 (17)

The Colts don't get many style points for their three-game winning streak but they're getting it done with defense, typically good running and just enough of Philip Rivers finding the right guys. They have a good showdown with the team just ahead of them, the Browns.

15. Chicago Bears 3-1 (12)

The Bears don't really have a quarterback answer between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. The inconsistency of their running game and run defense also are real concerns to think they're playoff pretenders.

16. Las Vegas Raiders 2-2 (14)

The Raiders have had a reality check against the Patriots and Bills after beating the Panthers and the Saints. With Derek Carr playing well, they have proved a wild-card playoff berth is well within their sights.

17. Carolina Panthers 2-2 (21)

The Panthers lost Christian McCaffrey but seem to have gained a identity with Teddy Bridgewater leading the offense and Mike Davis and Reggie Bonnafon serving as supersubs. Matt Rhule is quickly getting the hang of the NFL coaching thing.

18. Arizona Cardinals 2-2 (13)

The Kyler Murray Experience continues to be fun, but Kliff Kingsbury's offense seems fully dependent on him in both the running and passing games. The defense should be a lot better than it is and the Lions' and the Panthers' debacles don't inspire.

19. Philadelphia Eagles 1-2-1 (26)

The Eagles worked hard to get their win over the 49ers with offensive grit and defensive physicality, overcoming their major injuries and more than minor weaknesses. They are far from a complete team but they played better complementary football when they absolutely needed it.

20. Dallas Cowboys 1-3 (18)

The Cowboys' defense is atrocious and without Dak Prescott they would be winless. But because of Prescott, they are a very dangerous team and still can win the weak NFC East. They won't be facing big-time offenses every week.

IYER: Dak, division are two reasons not to worry about Cowboys

21. Cincinnati Bengals 1-2-1 (27)

The Bengals are pretty close to being an undefeated team with Joe Burrow, given the close calls with the Chargers and the Browns. But their record reflects their offensive improvements are dragged down by defensive stodginess.

22. Minnesota Vikings 1-3 (28)

The Vikings have accepted their defense can't stop much so they have broken out of their offensive shell, getting more aggressive in the passing game without losing the explosiveness and important balance provided by Dalvin Cook and their running game. It's a glimmer of hope for Mike Zimmer's team to get back on track.

23. Los Angeles Chargers 1-3 (22)

The Chargers can't turn back to Tyrod Taylor with the way rookie first-rounder Justin Herbert has operated the offense, getting big plays out of everyone beyond Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry. The loss of Austin Ekeler, however, is a big blow for so many more things that could help.

24. Detroit Lions 1-3 (19)

The Lions were on to something when they led the Saints 14-0 in Week 4, only to see their defense quickly crumble again vs. both run and pass. With no running game, too, despite a deep committee and commitment, there's simply too much on Matthew Stafford again to try to win games.

25. Washington Football Team 1-3 (20)

Dwayne Haskins did respond to Ron Rivera's challenge to keep his job, throwing for 314 yards and limiting mistakes against the Ravens. But the defense simply cannot hold up anymore with the offensive limitations, especially without Chase Young.

The referenced media source is missing and needs to be re-embedded.

26. Miami Dolphins 1-3 (23)

The Dolphins fought hard to hang with the Seahawks for a while but streaky Ryan Fitzpatrick made too many mistakes at home. Their defensive inconsistency is also maddening, but what hurts vs. the pass is how much they need to sell out to slow down the run.

27. Jacksonville Jaguars 1-3 (24)

The Jaguars look like they will be in mostly close games vs. fellow lesser teams because of Gardner Minshew and James Robinson, but the defense is equal opportunity bad against run and pass after their mass exodus of talent.

28. Denver Broncos 1-3 (30)

The Broncos found some offensive life without Drew Lock and Courtland Sutton, but the defense is a frustrating shell of what it could be for Vic Fangio. The Jets might be the only win for a while with at the Patriots up next.

29. Atlanta Falcons 0-4 (29)

The Falcons' defense is a worse look for Dan Quinn than the blown leads, but of course those two things are closely related. Facing the Packers wasn't exactly a get-well game and Matt Ryan and their explosive passing game can do only so much.

30. Houston Texans 0-4 (25)

The Texans' defense is their biggest problem, too, as it doesn't matter what Bill O'Brien is trying to do to boost Deshaun Watson and the offense. O'Brien the general manager, however, put them in these predicaments on both sides of the ball.

31. New York Giants 0-4 (31)

The Giants' defense continues to grind away for Joe Judge and Patrick Graham, but their offensive limitations around Daniel Jones with no Saquon Barkley will keep limiting their winning potential all season.

32. New York Jets 0-4 (32)

Sam Darnold showed his toughness in trying to get them off the mat against the Broncos, but through all the offensive injuries for Adam Gase, it is the defensive dysfunction under Gregg Williams that is costing this team more.
