The Seahawks would become Smith's fourth team in four seasons. He spent 2018 with the Chargers, throwing only four passes (one completion) in five regular-season appearances.
He would join a Seahawks team that is set at its No. 1, with Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson, but lists as backups only Paxton Lynch, who didn't play in the NFL in 2018 after being waived by the Broncos before the season, and recently signed undrafted free agent Taryn Christion out of South Dakota State.
Smith spent four seasons with the Jets, who took him in the second round (39th overall) in the 2013 draft. He started 30 games over his first two seasons in New York, completing 466 of 810 passes for 5,571 yards and 25 TDs, but he was intercepted 25 times and sacked a whopping 71 times as the team went 12-20.
His 2015 season was derailed in August when he suffered a broken jaw in a locker-room altercation with Jets teammate IK Enemkpali. Smith appeared in only one game that season, when starter Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injured thumb.
It took until Week 6 of the 2016 season for Smith to unseat Fitzpatrick as the starter, but the next week, Smith suffered a torn ACL, effectively ending his season. He signed with the Giants the following March (he started one game, in Week 13, when Eli Manning was benched for a week), and then bounced to the Chargers last season.
All told, he has appeared in 10 games since 2015.
