NFL Draft 2019: Buccaneers' Bruce Arians shares best advice leading up to top pick image

Bruce Arians is sticking to a proven method when it comes to the Buccaneers' first-round selection.

Arians, who took over the organization in January, currently has the fifth-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and plans to take the best player available — whether he fits into Tampa Bay's system or not.

"You can't draft for need," Arians said ahead of Thursday's draft, via the team's official website. "You draft for need, you get fired.

"Draft the best player, and if you've got two of them now you've got three of them. Just take the best players available for you. Now, if you've got four players right there together and one of them is a need, that's the home run. That's the home run."

The Bucs should land a top talent who could fit into the team's defense. Several mock drafts have Tampa Bay selecting linebacker Devin White out of LSU. The team has also been linked to Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen.

Tampa Bay finished the 2018 season near the bottom of the league in total defense, giving up 383.4 yards on average, and rushing defense, allowing 4.7 yards per attempt.

In a defense-heavy class, Arians should fill the need when it's the Bucs' time on the clock. He isn't looking to trade down and said it would take an impressive offer to move Tampa Bay out of the top five.

"It would have to be some hellacious picks, because there are five guys on the board I love," he said. "You'd have to throw the bank and open a vault for me and Jason (Licht) to probably move back. That's not saying that we wouldn't…just looking at the guys that are there. Really, (it's) six guys that are once-in-a-generation type players.

"I feel great about this draft."
