PFF’s Trevor Sikkema listed the best offseason decision for each NFC team and the one for the Atlanta Falcons should surprise absolutely no one. Sikkema praised Atlanta’s aggression to shore up the most important position and signing former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Falcons were behind the eight-ball in the passing game last season, ranking 22nd in EPA/dropback, but they picked up a quarterback that led a top-ten offense (Minnesota was ninth in EPA/dropback through the first eight weeks) before his season ended unceremoniously with a torn Achilles.
The best move the Falcons made this offseason was certainly addressing their quarterback position as aggressively as possible in free agency by signing the best quarterback on the market. The Falcons were a good team last year and with even average quarterback play could have been a playoff team. Kirk Cousins has them as the betting favorite to win the NFC South in 2024.
According to the lack of moves the Falcons have made outside of the Cousins move, the thought process for Atlanta is simple: The quarterback and the offensive system held them back from the playoff spot that was rightfully theirs in 2023.
Now, they have their leader, the plan is in place and the Falcons are ready to make the playoffs. All they have to do is finish the job.
