The Browns' winless streak is now at zero. After going 635 days without a victory, Cleveland finally took home a W on Thursday, beating the Jets 21-17.
Cleveland backup quarterback Baker Mayfield made his NFL debut after Tyrod Taylor left the game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. The beginning of "Baker Time" proved to be a turning point.
The first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft gave Browns fans lots to cheer about with 17-for-23 passing for 201 yards. Mayfield did not just make plays behind center, either; he also caught a pass from Jarvis Landry for a two-point conversion that tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter.
BROWNS WIN: Three takeaways from the victory
Carlos Hyde's second 1-yard touchdown run of the night, with 2:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, proved to be the deciding score. Cleveland intercepted Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold twice to seal the victory.
Taylor struggled before exiting the game, going 4 for 14 for 19 yards and no touchdowns. Cleveland coach Hue Jackson told reporters after the game that he would need to "watch the tape" before deciding on Taylor or Mayfield to start in Week 4 against the Raiders in Oakland.
The Browns entered the game as home favorites for the first time since 2015, but things were not going in their favor at the start. They fell behind 14-0 in the first half after a pair of rushing touchdowns by former Browns running back Isaiah Crowell.
The Browns are now 1-1-1, their best start since 2011. The Jets fall to 1-2; up next for them are the Jaguars in Jacksonville.
Before the season started, locked refrigerators containing Bud Light were put in Cleveland bars, with the promise of free beer after the first Browns win of the season. They had stayed locked until late Thursday .
