The New York Giants signed free-agent running back Joshua Kelley, the team announced Thursday.

With some injuries in the backfield to a pair of rookies in Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle) and Dante Miller (hamstring), the Giants needed to add some veteran depth.

Kelley was a fourth-round pick with the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2020 NFL Draft out of UCLA. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Chargers before hitting free agency this offseason.

In 54 career games (four starts), Kelley has 320 rushing attempts for 1,148 rushing yards and six touchdowns, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. He's added 50 receptions for 319 receiving yards.

In a corresponding move, the Giants placed safety Elijah Riley (concussion) on the Reserve/Injured list.

The Giants also officially announced the signings of safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland. Additionally, they announced the release of veteran safety Jalen Mills and the trade that sent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday night.
