The New York Giants have been working to improve the roster under the regime of general manager Joe Schoen since he took over in 2022.
Part of that job includes making financially sound deals to find value throughout the roster. It's one of the most difficult tasks a general manager hopes to achieve.
While every team has one or two players they are likely overpaying for in relation to their roster, the Giants had two players who were listed among the most overpaid players at their positions in the entire NFL.
According to Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News, the Giants are overpaying for the services of guard Jon Runyan and kicker Graham Gano.
Needing to shore up the interior offensive line, the Giants brought in the veteran to compete for the right guard spot. However, Iyer believes the Giants "overspent inside in free agency for the fading former Packer."
The offensive line is still a major question mark for the Giants and is likely going to be the unit that makes or breaks the season for Big Blue. How Runyan performs is a massive part of that.
As it pertains to Gano, Iyer said the veteran kicker "has limited range and has started to become less reliable on field goals at 37."
Appearing in only eight games in 2023, Gano is coming off a career-worst 64.7% field-goal percentage. Five of his six missed field goals came between 30 and 49 yards.
We'll see what happens during the upcoming season, but the Giants are relying heavily on these two veterans to return to form if they want any chance of competing for a playoff spot.
