The Los Angeles Rams invested heavily into their secondary this offseason, adding veterans at both cornerback and safety to replenish a group that struggled last season with too many mistakes. They spent plenty of money to shore up their weakest link, and one of those veterans was former Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White.
With Aaron Donald's retirement, the Rams needed to invest in the rest of their defense to help replace his effect in the aggregate. Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker named one "bounce-back" candidate from each team and identified White as a candidate to have a rebound season.
"White was regarded as a burgeoning cornerback until the injury bug bit — and it hasn’t released its jaws much in the past few years. White has played just 631 snaps across the past two seasons and tore his Achilles in Week 4 of 2023. However, White was off to a strong bounce back a year ago. He allowed just nine catches for 60 yards on 116 coverage snaps, also racking up an interception in that span. In fact, his 79.0 coverage grade (albeit in a very limited sample) was his highest since 2017.
The Rams could let White start promptly, especially because of Derion Kendrick‘s struggles through two seasons. What could also benefit White is having veteran Darious Williams beside him, as he could regain confidence and ability while Williams handles the more difficult assignments."
The Rams need White to be healthy, as their cornerback room has particularly struggled over the past two seasons. Cobie Durant has been inconsistent, while Derion Kendrick has been downright unplayable at times. White's veteran presence will be a boon for the younger players in that room. If he can return to his former self pre-injury, the Rams could have struck gold for cheap.
