It appears the Saints are interested in giving second-round pick Michael Thomas competition as the team's possession receiver.

NFL Media reported Thursday that the Saints are making the strongest push to sign free-agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin, making the favorites to land him. The biggest selling point for the Saints is the fact Boldin loves Saints receivers coach John Morton — the duo spent two seasons together in San Francisco.

Boldin, 35, was never a burner off the line of scrimmage, but he could still be productive in New Orleans' offense because Drew Brees has a knack for figuring out everyone's strengths.

A 13-year veteran, Boldin also met with the Redskins in March and the Lions in June.

Though Boldin is well past his prime, he has accumulated 1,009 receptions for 13,195 yards and 74 touchdowns in his career. He also would be a strong locker-room presence who would help the Saints' quartet of young pass catchers.
