Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has forgotten more about football than many will ever know, but despite being out of a job at the moment, he may have a lot to offer teams that are willing to pay.
On Thursday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio suggested that NFL teams should hire Belichick to share his thoughts on the league's new kickoff rules.
"NFL teams should be clamoring to get his views on how to handle both ends of the new play, both when kicking and returning the kicks," Florio wrote. "And they should offer him a significant amount of cold, hard cash for his views."
The league passed a rule change this offseason that changes a number of things about the kickoffs including the alignment and adoption of "the landing zone."
Belichick is no stranger to special teams work, as he worked as an assistant special teams coach for the Detroit Lions (1976) and Denver Broncos (1978). He then worked as a special teams coach with New York Giants (1979-84).
"Of all people currently on the planet, Belichick is the one who would surely have the most ideas and opinions and possibilities for how to handle the new kickoff," Florio said. "It would be malpractice, frankly, to not try to get his input on how to best handle what fundamentally is an experiment for 2024."
It will be interesting to see if any teams actually follow his advice and hire the 71-year-old, or if he'll continue just helping out his son, Steve, at Washington here and there.
