The Las Vegas Raiders have the first two spots on their wide receiver depth chart wrapped up with Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, but the No. 3 job has yet to be settled completely, although the picture became a lot clearer last week.
Second-year wide receiver Tre Tucker has long been thought to be the favorite for the role, but the Raiders brought in two forms of competition in free agency with the signings of Michael Gallup and Jalen Guyton.
Gallup was easily the bigger threat to Tucker, but that was erased last week when the veteran receiver abruptly retired. Making matters worse for Las Vegas' depth options, the oft-injured Guyton landed on the PUP list to start camp.
With the Raiders lacking established options at the position, chances are they will be adding another wide receiver at some point. However, any addition Las Vegas makes isn't likely to be significant enough to shake things up.
No matter what the Raiders do, Tucker believes it's his job to lose, according to Levi Damien of Raiders Wire.
“It’s always going to be a competition,” Tucker said. “It’s my job to lose, you know. I’m going to take that approach, and whoever we bring in, and whoever we get, I’m just going to keep my head down and keep working.”
Tucker had some drop issues during one practice of training camp thus far, but that has not overshadowed the progress he's shown, something his teammates have noticed.
“So much better,” Jakobi Meyers said of Tucker. “I don’t think anybody worked harder this offseason. He had goals that he really focused on and he went and accomplished them. He catches the ball so much better.”
Tucker flashed his ability to be an impact playmaker during his first season, both in the slot and as a deep threat. He was always the best option for the No. 3 wide receiver job and it would be shocking if he doesn't end up there in 2024.
