The Las Vegas Raiders just cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday and they are already parting ways with one of their players, who also happens to be a former third-round pick in 2023.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are parting ways with Byron Young, who made the cut on the team's 53-man roster. The move isn't a total shocker, as Young had a brutal rookie campaign in the NFL and didn't do much this offseason. The surprising part comes more from the fact that they did it one day after final cuts instead of just cutting him loose the day prior.
Young appeared in six games during his rookie campaign but tallied just four tackles in 99 defensive snaps and 13 special teams snaps.
The hope was that he would turn things around in 2024, but he showed no signs of being on that path during both training camp and the preseason. Young amounts to just the latest in a long line of Raiders draft busts.
The Raiders claimed a pair of players off waivers on Wednesday in safety Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu, so the latter will be his replacement. The Raiders need to make one more move to clear a roster spot for Harper.
