According to a recent court filing in Arizona, the wife of Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has filed for bankruptcy.
The filing was made in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona on June 12, 2024, and was done by Pierce's wife, Jocelyn. The filing states that Las Vegas' head coach invested in car dealerships that defaulted on their loans.
Antonio Pierce was named as the guarantor of the judgments that equal more than $28 million, with $23 million coming from Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation, and another $4.5 million from Hyundai Capital America.
Here are the details of the filing, via sports law reporter and attorney, Jason Morrin:
NEW: Jocelyn Pierce, wife of Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce, files for bankruptcy. Per the filing, Mr. Pierce invested in car dealerships that defaulted on their loans. He was named as a guarantor of judgments = over $28M. Lenders now seek to satisfy judgments from marital assets.
Both companies recently attempted to garnish the Raiders head coach's wages and are seeking to satisfy the judgment via marital assets. Mrs. Pierce claims she did not sign a personal guaranty on the loans and is seeking to protect her assets.
Mrs. Pierce filed for bankruptcy on 6/12/24 but claims she did not sign any personal guaranty on the loans. Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation (holding a $23M judgment) and Hyundai Capital America ($4.5M judgment), recently attempted to garnish Mr. Pierce’s wages.
In the filing, Mrs. Pierce requests an extension of time to file documents required by Rule 1007(b)(1): "The Debtor was forced to file quickly and with little preparation to protect her assets and those of the marital community from Mr. Pierce’s judgment creditors."
Here's more from the court filing:
In the 2010s, Mr. Pierce was convinced to invest in car dealerships. Despite his role as a mere passive investor with no oversight or management of the business' affairs, Mr. Pierce was asked to sign various documents. Although the debtor has no direct knowledge of the events, personal guaranties were later produced bearing Mr. Pierce's name. When several of the businesses defaulted on their loans, the lenders obtained judgments against the businesses and Mr. Pierce as a guarantor. The debtor is informed that these judgments amount to more than $28 million.
Prior to his stint with the Raiders, Pierce worked as an assistant coach at Arizona State from 2018-21. Pierce joined the Raiders in 2022 as the linebackers coach and served as the interim head coach in 2023 before being given the full-time gig this offseason.
