Indianapolis Colts cornerback JuJu Brents continues lose the battle against injuries.
The second-round pick for the Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft has struggled to stay on the field and now, he's reportedly set to miss the entire season due to a knee injury, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Tuesday.
An already thin group for the Colts, the cornerback position now becomes an even bigger question mark with the news following Brents' injury.
JuJu Brents injury update
It isn't clear when Brents suffered the injury, and there are conflicting reports about the timeline for his return.
While Rapoport said Brents will go on the season-ending Reserve/Injured list, Mike Chappell of Fox59 reported the team is waiting to get the prognosis after surgery with a chance to be back in mid-December.
Chappell also reported the injury is not an ACL tear. He tweaked the knee injury, and an MRI revealed more damage was done than previously thought.
Either way, this is a massive blow to the Colts secondary — a unit that has already faced plenty of questions since the start of the offseason.
The Colts just allowed Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud to complete 24-of-32 passes (75%) for 234 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 115.9 passer rating.
JuJu Brents injury history
The former Iowa and Kansas State product has been dealing with injuries since his college days. He missed the majority of the 2019 season and some of the 2020 season due to a knee injury. He also was drafted by the Colts with the knowledge that he underwent wrist surgery during the spring in 2023.
Brents also dealt with a hamstring injury during his rookie campaign and was hampered by a shoulder injury during training camp.
Since being drafted, Brents has appeared in 10 career games (nine starts) across two seasons.
Colts depth chart
Considering the fact that Brents played 62 defensive snaps during Sunday's 29-27 loss, the Colts now have a massive role to fill at the cornerback position.
It isn't clear if they will scour free agency or make a trade, but relying on the current depth chart won't be feasible for the rest of the season.
With Kenny Moore II manning the slot and Jaylon Jones holding down one of the boundary spots, the Colts have Dallis Flowers, who was a healthy scratch in Week 1, and Samuel Wommack III, who profiles more as a slot cornerback.
They also have rookie Jaylin Simpson on the practice squad. He worked at outside cornerback during training camp and the preseason but failed to make the 53-man roster.
