Jordy Nelson is finished with the NFL, and he's ending with the team he began with in Green Bay.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced that the 10-year veteran informed the team about his plans to sign a one-day contract and retire with the team Sunday. And he did just that.
The wideout was selected by Green Bay out of Kansas State with the No. 36 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He remained with the team from then until 2017, as he was released following that season and went on to join the Raiders for 2018.
"Jordy will always be a member of the Packers family and we look forward to his eventual induction into the Packers Hall of Fame," Gutekunst said following Nelson's release last year.
Nelson has undoubtedly earned this honor.
He ranks top 5 in franchise history for receptions (550), receiving yards (7,848), touchdown receptions (69) and 100-yard receiving games (25). Nelson is also the team's all-time leader in playoff receptions, notching 54 catches in 13 postseason appearances.
Nelson was actually quite productive for Oakland in 2018, tallying 63 receptions for 739 yards and three touchdowns on the year. He said "It probably would be hard to say no" if Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers asked him to play again, but he ultimately decided to hang it up.
Green Bay is ushering in a new era under head coach Matt LaFleur, who was hired in January. It is looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016, as it finished last season with a 6-9-1 record.
