Joe Montana was candid with his opinions on the struggling 49ers, 1-4 and in last place in the NFC West. The former quarterback said a huge part of the problem was the organization letting Jim Harbaugh go to coach at Michigan.
"Honestly, here's a guy that's been very successful for you quickly. He put a good team together. And now he's gone. Now he's out of there. Now they're struggling. Players are leaving," Montana said on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd." "Is that Harbaugh's fault? I don't think so. He's not there anymore. Where those troubles begin and why those guys left, even people close to the team don't know, so …"

Montana also touched on Colin Kaepernick's issues on the field. Kaepernick owns a career-worst 76.8 quarterback rating this year, and Montana was open to giving him some advice.
"Make the coaches and the offense go back to letting him play the game that he knows," Montana said. "Where he's been the best is when he's out of the pocket. You just have to say, 'Hey this is what he does.' He's big, he's strong. As long as he's protecting himself, let him get out of there. Because in the pocket, decisions have to be made quicker. Anticipation, that's not where he's made his living for the longest time."
The 49ers might stand a chance against the Ravens this Sunday, who are also 1-4.
